Russian State Duma speaker calls for regulating AI in civilian sector

MOSCOW. June 3 (Interfax) - State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin highlighted risks in the development of artificial intelligence technologies at a meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly Council of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) on Monday.

"The development and use of artificial intelligence technologies in the civilian sector should be regulated and controlled. We should discuss such issues because they are essential to CSTO member states' security," the Duma's press service quoted Volodin as saying.

Besides its advantages, artificial intelligence "poses risks, which range from cyber fraud and drawing citizens into illegal activity to interference with national security and critical infrastructure systems," he said.

The CSTO Parliamentary Assembly Council approved a statement on the development of AI technologies. The statement noted the need to develop modern technologies and their huge role in solving global problems and achieving sustainable development goals.

The council met in Almaty, Kazakhstan, on Monday.
