Car imports into Ukraine up 67% in Q1 2024 - Customs Service

MOSCOW. May 28 (Interfax) - Imports of cars into Ukraine in January-March 2024 grew by 67% to over 86,000, or by 61% in value terms to $1.1 billion, compared to the same period last year, Ukrainian media reported referring to the State Customs Service's post on its social account.

Import duties for these cars paid to the state budget in the first quarter of 2024 grew by 50% to UAH 11.1 billion year-on-year, it said.

The largest number of cars imported into Ukraine in this period came from Germany (17,100), followed in this respect by the United States (14,500), China (9,100), Japan (8,900), and South Korea (4,400).

The top-10 countries from which Ukraine imported cars in January-March 2024 also includes Slovakia (4,200), France (4,100), Mexico (4,000), the United Kingdom (3,700), and the Czech Republic (3,700).

In value terms, the largest car imports were from the U.S. ($211.2 million, with UAH 2 billion paid to the budget in import duties), followed by Germany ($168.7 million, over UAH 2.1 billion), China ($138.2 million, UAH 182.3 million), Japan ($133.6 million, nearly UAH 1.8 billion), Slovakia ($81.7 million, UAH 788.4 million), the United Kingdom ($59.6 million nearly UAH 492 million), Hungary ($53.2 million, UAH 515.3 million), South Korea ($49.3 million, UAH 468.4 million), Poland ($40.2 million, over UAH 351.6 million), and Romania ($38 million, UAH 311.9 million).

Ukrautoprom, the national association of motor vehicle manufacturers, said earlier referring to the state statistics service that Ukraine imported 239 buses in the first quarter of 2024, including 60 new and 179 used ones, with a total customs value of over $12.1 million.

The largest number of new buses came from Turkey (57) and used ones from Poland (62).
