Chinese transit via Northern Sea Route may reach 50 mln tonnes by 2030 - Rosatom head

HARBIN. May 17 (Interfax) - Rosatom head Alexei Likhachev has informed Russian President Vladimir Putin about the establishment of a Russian-Chinese sub-commission for the Northern Sea Route.

"Besides nuclear technologies, we have a huge range of technological sovereignty projects. The key project is the work done on the Northern Sea Route. Vladimir Vladimirovich, please be informed that it has been decided to set up a sub-commission for the Northern Sea Route, as you ordered. We represent Russia, and the transport minister represents China," Likhachev told Putin during a tour of the Russian-Chinese Expo.

"Chinese transit via the Northern Sea Route has a potential to grow to 50 million tonnes by 2030. We are drawing partners into the construction of Arctic vessels and the development of ports and logistic centers. This is a joint project to the benefit of both countries," Likhachev said.
