Almost 2,200 trucks waiting to cross Belarusian-EU border

MINSK. May 8 (Interfax) - More than 400 trucks have joined the line at the Belarusian-EU border over the past day, the Belarusian State Border Committee said.

More than 2,150 trucks amassed at the border on Wednesday morning, compared to around 1,700 the day before, the committee said.

As many as 1,070 trucks are headed to Lithuania. "Over the past day, the Medininkai checkpoint (Kamenny Log on the Belarusian side) cleared 105 trucks out of the 500 possible, which is only 21% of the regular number and four out of 20 vehicles cleared per hour," it said.

Only two checkpoints, Medininkai and Salcininkai (Benyakoni), are open at the Lithuanian-Belarusian border. Lithuania closed the Sumskas (Losha) and Tverecius (Vidzy) checkpoints at the Belarusian border on August 18, 2023, and the closure of Lavoriskes (Kotlovka) and Raigardas (Privalka) followed on March 1, 2024.

In turn, Poland has closed all checkpoints at the Belarusian border except one for trucks - Kukuryki (Kozlovichi), while the Terespol (Brest) checkpoint only clears cars. The Paternieki (Grigorovshchina) checkpoint operates at the Latvian border.
