Kiev expects European Commission to facilitate increase of electricity import, export

MOSCOW. May 7 (Interfax) - Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada Committee on Energy and Housing and Communal Services Chairman Andrei Gerus has called on representatives of the European Commission during a meeting with European Commissioner for Energy Kardi Simson to facilitate an increase of import of electricity from Europe to Ukraine to 2,200 MW and export to 1,000 MW.

According to Ukrainian media outlets, Gerus called an increase of the capacity of inter-state connections for import and export of electricity as one of the tracks of Ukrainian power engineers' preparations for the winter in a post on his social networks.

He highlighted the restoration of generation facilities, including, in particular, Ukrenergo's thermal power plants and sub-stations, and the construction of distributed generation facilities among other tracks.

"Working on these tracks will enable us to prepare for the winter and reduce the risks of power cuts," Gerus said.

As reported, the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E) increased the permitted capacity for import of electricity from Europe to Ukraine and Moldova from 1,200 MW to 1,700 MW starting on December 1, 2023. The capacity for export from Ukraine and Moldova to Europe, to the ENTSO-E zone, is 550 MW as of March 1, 2024. There are no restrictions for Moldova.
