Lithuanian Railways and Ukrainian Railways sign memorandum on joint development of route through Poland

VILNIUS. May 6 (Interfax/BNS) - Lithuanian Railways (Lietuvos Gelezinkeliai, LTG) and Ukrainian Railways (Ukrzaliznytsia) have agreed to develop an international intermodal freight route between Klaipeda and Kiev through Poland.

The companies signed a memorandum on coordinating the project and providing the necessary tools and resources for its implementation, a statement from LTG said.

"We consider Ukraine and Ukrainian Railways as our strategic partners in ensuring uninterrupted movement of goods between our countries, as well as expanding export and import opportunities through the Klaipeda port between Ukraine and Scandinavia," LTG Group CEO Egidijus Lazauskas said.

The first test runs along the route are expected to take place this year. The route will be used for regular cargo transportation in the future.

This is not the first agreement between the companies. LTG and Ukrainian Railways agreed to cooperate to implement the Free Rail program initiated by LTG in May last year, and the parties signed a memorandum in Munich.

LTG Cargo, the freight transport division of LTG group, tested the carriage of semi-trailers by wagons between Kaunas and Kiev in November 2023.
