Azerbaijan reduces electricity production 8% in Q1, exports down 70.6%

BAKU. April 23 (Interfax) - Electricity production in Azerbaijan in the first quarter of 2024 totaled 7.129 billion kWh, Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov said on social media, citing operational data.

As previously reported, Azerbaijan generated 7.756 billion kWh of electricity in Q1 2023. Therefore, the Q1 2024 figure represents an 8.1% decrease in electricity production.

Thermal power plants produced about 6.52 billion kWh of electricity during the reporting period (91.4% of total output), while renewable energy sources produced 610.6 million kWh, a nearly 70% increase over Q1 2023.

The minister also said that electricity exports from Azerbaijan reached 360.3 million kWh in Q1 2024 (a 70.6% decrease), while imports totaled 44.3 million kWh (a 41.5% increase).

As previously reported, electricity production in Azerbaijan increased 0.9% in 2023 compared to 2022 to 29.277 billion kWh. Last year, the country exported 3.253 billion kWh of electricity (an 8.3% increase), and imported 211.8 million kWh (an increase of 54.5%).
