Ukraine's Energoatom signs agreement with Holtec on production of components for small reactors

MOSCOW. April 17 (Interfax) - Ukrainian Energoatom and American Holtec International have entered into an agreement on the production of components for small modular reactors (SMR) in Ukraine.

As Ukrainian media reported, citing the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine, the document was signed online by acting Chairman of the Board of Energoatom National Atomic Energy Company Petr Kotin and President and CEO of Holtec Chris Singh.

The agreement provides for the creation of production facilities for the nuclear energy sector, including for the production of systems, structures and components for small modular reactors, systems for storing and transporting spent nuclear fuel, and "other needs for the use of nuclear energy in the country," the ministry said.

Using Holtec technology, a centralized spent nuclear fuel storage facility was built in Ukraine and launched in 2022. There were 13 containers stored there at the end of 2023.

Energoatom and Holtec International agreed in November 2023 to build a plant in Ukraine for the production of spent nuclear fuel containers.
