Slovakia may start building highway to Uzhgorod-Vysne Nemecke checkpoint at Ukrainian border

MOSCOW. April 15 (Interfax) - Slovakia may start building a highway from Kosice to the Uzhgorod-Vysne Nemecke checkpoint at the Ukrainian border, Ukrainian media said, citing the press service for the Ukrainian Finance Ministry.

The highway project has been discussed at bilateral talks on the improvement of transborder traffic in Slovakia involving Ukrainian Deputy Finance Minister Alexander Kava as a member of a governmental delegation led by Prime Minister Denis Shmygal.

"In particular, the meeting addressed the project of a highway between the Uzhgorod-Vysne Nemecke checkpoint and the Kosice suburbs. This is part of the Slovak main route, D1, which connects the two biggest cities, Bratislava and Kosice, and operates as part of the European highway network," the statement said.

The sides also discussed the opening of the Uzhgorod-Vysne Nemecke checkpoint for both vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists. The checkpoint will be accessible by public transport on both sides of the border.

Additionally, it is planned to broaden the checkpoint access area from four to five lanes, thus increasing its throughput.

Ukrainian Deputy Minister for Communities and Territorial Development Sergei Derkach said earlier that a passenger terminal with several lanes for buses would be built at the Uzhgorod-Vysne Nemecke checkpoint at the Slovak border by the end of 2024.
