Floods will not damage crop sowing in Kazakhstan - Agriculture Ministry

ASTANA. April 10 (Interfax) - The floods that hit ten regions of Kazakhstan will not affect the sowing campaign this year, the Ministry of Agriculture told Interfax.

"We note that the floods will not have a negative impact on sowing work. On the contrary, farmers have noted a sufficient level of moisture reserves in the soil. This was facilitated by heavy rains in September 2023 and a snowy winter," the ministry said.

This winter there was enough snow in the northern regions of Kazakhstan, which prevented the soil from deep freezing, the Agriculture Ministry said.

"Accordingly, the unfrozen soil absorbs melt water well and increases reserves of productive moisture," the ministry said.

In Kazakhstan, the largest spring floods in 80 years have resulted in a difficult situation; a state of emergency has been declared in 10 regions. The Aktobe, Akmola, Atyrau, North Kazakhstan, West Kazakhstan, Kostanay and Pavlodar regions were especially hard hit.
