Kazakhstan to introduce 300,000 tonnes quota for raw sugar import

ASTANA. April 9 (Interfax) - Kazakhstan's Agriculture Ministry has drafted an order to introduce a quota for duty-free import of raw sugar in the amount of 300,000 tonnes.

"For the undisrupted supply of raw materials to sugar producers and subsequent saturation of the domestic market, at the EEC [Eurasian Economic Commission] level, a concession for the duty-free import of raw cane sugar from third countries in the amount of 300,000 tonnes has been agreed upon for the Republic of Kazakhstan," the draft order says.

The draft order is posted for discussion on the Open Legal Entities portal. The discussion will last until April 22.

According to the draft order, the quota will be valid until December 31, 2024.

Last year, the quota for the import of raw sugar was 350,000 tonnes.

As reported, this year Kazakhstan intends to double the area under sugar beet, increasing it by 13,300 hectares to 26,300 hectares.
