Ukraine's Energoatom to start making nuclear fuel near Yuzhnoukrainsk

MOSCOW. April 5 (Interfax) - Ukrainian nuclear energy company Energoatom plans to build a facility near the city of Yuzhnoukrainsk to produce fuel assemblies for nuclear power plants.

The project has successfully gone through public hearings, Ukrainian media reported, citing a company statement on Telegram.

The construction of the facility is expected to create more than 110 jobs.

Energoatom said the project will use the technology U.S. company Westinghouse. The production process at the future facility will involve mechanical assembly of nuclear fuel for VVER-1000 reactors from ready components, some of which are made at Energoatom facilities.

Operations will include manufacturing of stainless steel products (heads, bottom nozzles), assembly of the fuel assemblies, control of produced assemblies, temporary storage and preparation for shipments.

Energoatom and Westinghouse signed an agreement on supplying fuel assemblies for all of Ukraine's nuclear power plants in June 2022.
