Court rejects businessman Tinkov's appeal against ruling obliging him to pay 20 mln rubles to Deripaska
MOSCOW. April 2 (Interfax) - A court has rejected businessman Oleg Tinkov (designated as a foreign agent in Russia)'s appeal against a ruling obliging him to pay 20 million rubles in compensation to businessman Oleg Deripaska in a defamation case.
"Earlier today, the Krasnodar Territorial Court dismissed the appeal of businessman Oleg Tinkov against the ruling on the claim from Oleg Deripaska," Deripaska's lawyer Alexei Melnikov told Interfax.
The lower-tier court's ruling has therefore taken effect and must be enforced.
On October 11, 2023, the Ust-Labinsk District Court in Krasnodar Territory upheld the defamation claim of businessman Oleg Deripaska against Oleg Tinkov and Meta Platforms (designated extremist and banned in Russia). The claim was based on Tinkov's insulting comments made on Instagram (an information resource of an entity banned in Russia).
The court ordered Tinkov to pay 20 million rubles and compelled him and Meta Platforms to remove the information defaming Deripaska and to publish a refutation on Tinkov's page on Instagram (an information resource of an entity banned in Russia). No financial claims were made to Meta.
The court set the judicial penalty for the possible non-fulfilment of the ruling at 100,000 rubles per day for each respondent.
Deripaska's lawyer said "the money would be spent on charity."
