Bangladesh interested in building two more power units at Rooppur nuclear plant

MOSCOW. April 2 (Interfax) - Bangladesh is interested in building two more power units at the Rooppur nuclear plant, Atomstroyexport said in a statement, quoting Rosatom General Director Alexei Likhachev.

"We are now starting to discuss new projects. The Bengal side is expressing a lot of interest in the construction of two more power units at the Rooppur NPP site," Likhachev said.

In addition, the possibility of building a multi-purpose high-capacity research reactor in Bangladesh that will be able to solve problems in the field of science and nuclear medicine is being explored, he said.

It was reported earlier that the first unit of the Rooppur NPP is to be put into operation in December 2024 and the second in 2025.

Rosatom is building the Rooppur NPP in Bangladesh under an intergovernmental agreement signed in 2011. It will have two reactor units with a total capacity of 2,400 MW. There is currently no nuclear power generation in Bangladesh, where electricity is scarce.
