Kokshetau thermal power plant construction with Inter RAO to begin 2024 - Kazakh minister

ALMATY. March 26 (Interfax) - Russian company Inter RAO, in collaboration with Kazakh partners, is set to start construction of the Kokshetau thermal power plant this year, Kazakh Energy Minister Almasadam Satkaliyev said.

"Adjustments are being made to the feasibility study for the Kokshetau project, signaling significant progress and the potential for construction to begin this year," he said during a briefing.

The minister also mentioned progress on other planned thermal power plants. The feasibility study development phase has been completed to enable the finalization of technical solutions, procurement of necessary equipment, and establishment of the implementation schedule.

"Currently, coordination is ongoing, including in Russia, for the provision of preferential terms on export credit loans to equipment suppliers," he said.

In November 2023, the Kazakh and Russian energy ministers signed a cooperation memorandum for three thermal power plant projects in Kazakhstan. Deputy Prime Minister Roman Sklyar confirmed Russia's commitment to construct a thermal power plant with investor funding.

Subsequently, Kazakhstan's Energy Ministry announced plans to sign a memorandum with Russian company Inter RAO - Export for building thermal power plants in Kokshetau, Semey, and Ust-Kamenogorsk.
