South Africa collaborating with Rosatom on floating NPP project
SOCHI. March 26 (Interfax) - Rosatom state nuclear energy corporation and South Africa are jointly developing a floating nuclear power plant project for the country, Ryan Collier, Rosatom CEO in Central and South Africa, said during a briefing at the Atomexpo 2024 forum.
"South Africa is collaborating with Rosatom on a floating NPP project. The matter of localization is very important. We will localize production where we can," Collier said.
Rosatom CEO Alexei Likhachev previously said that the state nuclear energy corporation has received a number of applications from African countries to consider projects to construct new NPPs, saying that South Africa has also demonstrated such interest.
Rosatom is also considering the construction of a small-scale hydroelectric power station with one of the African countries, and the matter is at the fullest extent of being worked out, Likhachev said.
