Tokayev orders introducing advanced early warning systems at meeting with chief seismologist

ASTANA. March 21. (Interfax) - Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has met with Director of the National Scientific Center for Seismological Observations and Research Daulet Sarsenbayev during his working trip to Almaty, the presidential press service said.

Tokayev said at the meeting that seismic safety is a crucial factor of the country's national security, which affects the state of security for the population, economic facilities and the environment.

"He pointed to a number of issues related to the introduction of advanced early warning systems and improving the qualifications of seismologists [...], he noted that the scientific center is entrusted with important tasks to develop and apply scientific methods of earthquake forecasting, and underlined the need to develop scientific research and use innovative technologies in the center's work," a statement published on the presidential website says.

In 2023, equipment worth 527 million tenge was purchased for 11 out of 16 seismic stations located in Almaty, 25 observation points were opened, ten stations were partially modernized and six new stations were launched, Sarsenbayev said.
