Using revenues from frozen Russian assets to help Ukraine has broad support among EU FMs - Borrell

BRUSSELS. March 19 (Interfax) - The possibility of using revenues from Russian assets frozen in the European Union to help Ukraine was on the agenda of the EU foreign ministers' meeting on Monday, and this proposal received tentative support, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said.

"After the discussion today I've seen that there is a strong support. Some member states that want to have more details, but there is, I think, a strong support to take the revenues, the windfall profits, and to use it to support Ukraine. How? Military," Borrell said at a press conference in Brussels following the ministers' meeting.

This could be done through the European Peace Facility and by enhancing Ukraine's defense capabilities, he said.

Borrell said he would now present this draft Council decision and a Council regulation proposal jointly with the European Commission.

"I do not say that there was unanimity but a strong consensus to take this decision," he said.
