EU to allocate additional 16 million euro to Tajikistan to complete construction of Gorno-Badakhshan hydroelectric power station

DUSHANBE. March 18 (Interfax) - The European Union will provide Tajikistan with an additional 16 million euro to complete the construction of the Sebzor hydroelectric power station and associated network infrastructure in the country's Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region.

The decision to allocate additional funding for this project was announced by Sarah Rinaldi, the head of the Middle East and Central Asia division of the European Commission's Directorate General for International Partnerships during a trip to Gorno-Badakhshan, the EU delegation said.

"This funding will not only contribute to the energy security of the population in the autonomous region, but will also help ensure access to clean energy to support basic needs in four districts of Badakhshan province in Afghanistan," the statement said.

Electricity will be supplied to households, schools, hospitals, and enterprises, the statement said.

The Sebzor hydroelectric power station is being constructed on the Shokhdara River in the Roshtkala district of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region. Development partners have already allocated more than 70 million euro for the project.

During her visit to Tajikistan, Rinaldi took part in a meeting of the subcommittee on development cooperation between the EU and the republic. The representatives discussed interaction in the context of the EU bilateral program for Tajikistan for 2021-2027.
