Azerbaijan to make efforts to promote S. Caucasus peace agenda within COP29

BAKU. March 15 (Interfax) - Azerbaijan will make efforts to promote a peace agenda in the South Caucasus within the framework of the 29th UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) to be held in Baku in November 2024, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said.

Meeting with Wolfgang Ischinger, President of the Foundation Council of the Munich Security Conference Foundation, in Baku on Friday, Aliyev referred to Azerbaijan as the country that had initiated a peace treaty with Armenia and proposed its fundamental principles, the presidential press service said in a statement on its website.

"COP29 would contribute to the peace agenda," it said.

"The head of state said that the agreements reached in relation to COP29 to be held in Azerbaijan had actually emerged as part of the peace agenda. In this regard, Azerbaijan will also make efforts to advance the peace agenda in the context of COP29 in the region," it said.

Aliyev said that, during his participation in the Munich Security Conference this past February, "cooperation issues related to COP29 were discussed between Azerbaijan and the Munich Security Conference," it said.

The parties discussed the possible arrangement of a special Munich Security Conference event to address climate security and the peace agenda on the sidelines of COP29 in Azerbaijan.

Ischinger said that the Munich Security Conference Foundation holds events in different regions around the world each year and invited Azerbaijan to attend them.

During their meeting, Aliyev and Ischinger exchanged opinions on issues of mutual interest, it said.
