Ukraine boosts electricity exports, cuts imports in Feb

MOSCOW. March 12 (Interfax) - Ukraine boosted electricity exports 12 times, but slashed imports by a third in February 2024 month-on-month, Ukrainian media reported, citing DiXi Group, which refers to the Energy Map website.

Ukraine exported a total of 63,100 MWh (5,200 MWh in January), of which the largest share of 32% (20,000 MWh) was shipped to Moldova, the group's statement said. Another 30% (19,100 MWh) was shipped to Romania, 20% (12,600 MWh) to Poland, 14% (9,000 MWh) to Slovakia, 4% (2,400 MWh) to Hungary, to which electricity supplies were resumed after a two-year break with the introduction of joint auctions for distributing cross-sections.

Exports exceeded imports on almost all days since February 11, it said.

However, at the end of the month, imports were 21 MWh more than exports, totaling 84,100 MWh (one third less than 122,800 MWh in January).

Of this volume, 40% (33,600 MWh) was imported from Slovakia, 34% (28,700 MWh) from Romania, 16% (13,600 MWh) from Poland, 7% (6,200 MWh) from Moldova, and 3% (2,100 MWh) from Hungary.

DiXi Group experts noted that in February 2023 there were no exports at all, while imports were 41% higher at 141,800 MWh.

They also noted that last month Ukraine received five times (February 2, 4, 27-29) emergency aid from Poland, which purchased Ukrainian electricity surplus totaling 5,900 MWh.

On February 7, Ukraine received 1,200 MWh of surplus electricity from Poland as emergency aid.
