Turkmen president, OSCE secretary general discuss environment, energy, transport cooperation

ASHGABAT. March 6 (Interfax) - Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov and Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) Secretary General Helga Schmid discussed cooperation between Turkmenistan and the OSCE on environmental issues, energy and transport at a meeting on Tuesday, the Turkmenistan State News Agency said.

Schmid reaffirmed the OSCE's interest in further strengthening cooperation with Turkmenistan.

It was said at the meeting that Turkmenistan has been implementing comprehensive measures to enhance environmental protection. In particular, Turkmenistan announced at the 28th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in Dubai in December 2023 that it was joining the Global Methane Commitment.

The Turkmen president also put forward an initiative at the 78th Session of the UN General Assembly to create a regional center for technologies related to climate change in Central Asia with its headquarters in Turkmenistan, the agency said.

The parties described energy as another promising area of cooperation. Berdimuhamedov reiterated the need for the OSCE's specific steps to bring energy resources to the world market and promote their transit, including the political, financial and environmental aspects of this process.

Cooperation in the transport sector also holds promise, they said. Turkmenistan's readiness to expand its partnership with the OSCE in certain areas was reaffirmed.
