Navalny buried at Borisovskoye Cemetery in Moscow

MOSCOW. March 1 (Interfax) - Alexei Navalny has been buried at Borisovskoye Cemetery in Moscow.

The burial ceremony was preceded by a funeral service at the Church of the Assuage My Sorrows Icon of the Mother of God in Moscow's Maryino neighborhood, where mourners could also bid farewell to Navalny.

The Russian Federal Penitentiary Service's department for the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous District reported Navalny's death at a local penal colony on February 16.

"Convict Alexei Navalny felt unwell and almost immediately lost consciousness during a walk," it said in a statement.

Penitentiary doctors arrived promptly, and "an ambulance was called for," it said." All necessary resuscitation measures were carried out, but failed. Paramedics confirmed the death of the convict. The causes of death are being established," the statement said.

The local branch of the Russian Investigative Committee said later that investigators in the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous District opened an inquiry into the causes of Navalny's death.

Navalny was serving a 19-year prison sentence at Penitentiary No. 3 in the settlement of Kharp in the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous District after being convicted by the Moscow City Court of establishing an extremist network, the Anti-Corruption Foundation (designated as extremist and banned in Russia). He had previously been convicted of a number of other crimes, including fraud.
