Interfax leading news agency in Russia by citations in foreign, local media
Interfax continued to maintain its lead among news agencies working in Russia by number if citations in leading foreign and Russian mass media outlets in the first half of 2014, according to the results of a study based on an analysis of publications available in leading international media aggregator Factiva (thousands of leading news and business sources from 200 countries) and the SCAN analytical system (over 16,000 sources).
The rating of Russia‘s three leading news agencies - Interfax, RIA Novosti and ITAR-TASS - by citations in international mass media outlets in the first half of 2014 includes the following Factiva categories:
- Leading international news agencies Reuters, Dow Jones, AFP, DPA, EFE, ANSA and Xinhua
- BBC Radio
- US Newspapers
- UK Newspapers
- German media (excluding news agencies)
- French media (excluding news agencies)
The study of how often news agencies were cited in Russian media was based on SCAN (System for Comprehensive Analysis of News) and focused on the three largest information agencies operating in Russia: Interfax, RIA Novosti and ITAR-TASS. The rating was compiled according to the following categories:
- All Russian mass media (2,633 sources represented in SCAN). In order to ensure the objectivity and integrity of data, citations of the agencies in their own information products were excluded from the rating. The search also excluded blogs, Internet resources and press monitoring.
- Russian central and national print media (434 of the most authoritative newspapers and magazines)
- National television and radio broadcasters (31 sources, including TV channels Channel One, Rossiya, NTV, Ren-TV and TVC and radio stations Radio Rossii, Mayak, Golos Rossii, Ekho Moskvy, Radio RSN, Vesti-FM, City-FM and Kommersant-FM, among others)
- Regional print publications in the most densely populated Russian regions (Bashkortostan, Volgograd Region, Voronezh Region, Irkutsk Region, Kemerovo Region, Krasnodar Territory, Krasnoyarsk Territory, Nizhny Novgorod Region, Novosibirsk Region, Perm Territory, Primorye, Rostov Region, Samara Region, St. Petersburg, Saratov Region, Sverdlovsk Region, Tatarstan, Khabarovsk Territory, Chelyabinsk Region; 1,167 sources in total)
INTERNATIONAL MEDIA
Interfax continued to lead in the citation rating of the three leading Russian news agencies in international media outlets, compiled based on an analysis of publications from the Factiva archive.
In the citation rating in the category of leading international news agencies, Interfax led by number of citations in all agencies and sources.

Foreign media
US newspapers in the English language cited Interfax 1,038 times, ITAR-TASS 387 times and RIA Novosti 381 times in the period from January 1 to June 30, 2014, the Factiva archive shows.
UK newspapers cited Interfax 777 times, ITAR-TASS 213 times and RIA Novosti 173 times.
There was a similar picture in the German media (not including news agencies), which cited Interfax 1,192 times, ITAR-TASS 360 times and RIA Novosti 123 times.
The French media (excluding news agencies) cited Interfax 296 times, RIA Novosti 167 times and ITAR-TASS 108 times, according to Factiva.
