Interfax, Ekho Moskvy rank best universities for 2013/2014 academic year

MOSCOW. June 5 (Interfax) - International information group Interfax and radio station Ekho Moskvy have released their fifth annual national university rankings for the 2013/2014 academic year.

The key aims of this project are to develop mechanisms and procedures for an independent evaluation of Russian universities and their education programs, to boost the competitiveness of Russia‘s education system, scientific research and technological entrepreneurship and to develop regional universities, considered the backbone of the new economy.

Lomonosov Moscow State University maintained its position at the top of the rankings in the 2013/2014 academic year. St. Petersburg State University was next and National Research Nuclear University MEPhI third.

The rankings included 161 universities, including 74 classic universities, 29 national research universities, 37 technical and technological universities (including 3 rail universities), 12 economics universities, 3 agrarian universities, 2 pedagogical universities, 2 construction universities, a medical university and one non-government university.

Six key parameters are used in the judging: educational activity; science and research activity; socialization, which reflects a university‘s social activity; internationalization or international activity; university brand and innovation and entrepreneurship.

The first two parameters carry a weight of 0.2 points each and the other parameters - 0.15. The rankings were compiled after processing information on forms filled out by university representatives, public data on university websites, public information resources from the Russian Education and Science Ministry and information from the SPARK (www.spark-interfax.ru) and SCAN (www.scan-interfax.ru) analytical systems.

The developers of the National University Ranking worked with Puschino Research Center in 2013-2014 to look at Russian universities in the life sciences sector and worked out a method for evaluating universities in this sector. As part of the approbation procedure for this method, surveys were conducted among the academic community and potential 2014 entrants. The key results of this study were discussed at the Bioforum-2014 in Puschino this April and have been published.
