*** Interfax and Ekho Moskvy began their joint project to provide ratings for Russia‘s top universities in December 2009. The first rating was published in June 2010 and had two categories: classic universities and law universities and faculties. Each category had 50 universities.
The range was expanded in 2011 to 104 universities, including 29 research universities. In addition, because 2011 was declared the Year of the Teacher, the 2010/2011 school year rating included teaching, humanitarian and linguistics universities, including 71 teacher training universities.
In 2012 the rating had 105 classic and national research universities, as well as 20 transport universities.
