Interfax most frequently sourced news agency in Russia and abroad in 2011

Interfax has once again been named Russia’s most frequently cited news agency both domestically and abroad.

According to a survey based on two major global media databases – Factiva (31,000 leading sources of political and business information) and LexisNexis (over 35,000 foreign sources of information), in addition to SCAN (System for Comprehensive Analysis of News - 4,167 sources) – Interfax was the most often-cited of all Russian news agency both at home and abroad in 2011.

The survey covered reference frequency rating in the international media in 2011 for the three major Russian news and information agencies – Interfax, RIA-Novosti and ITAR-TASS, and covered major international information agencies including Reuters, Dow Jones, AP, AFP, EFE, and Xinhua.

·       U.S. media (Factiva)

·       Leading UK newspapers (Factiva)
·       German media (Factiva)
·       German publications (LexisNexis – 198 German-language printed media)

Information agencies’ reference frequency in the Russian media was based on the SCAN system and involved eight major information agencies working in Russia: Interfax, RIA-Novosti, ITAR-TASS, Reuters, Prime, RosBusinessConsulting (RBC), Regnum, and Rosbalt.

This rating was based on the following categories:

·       All Russian mass media (2,064 sources, available in the SCAN system)
(To make the final report objective and authentic, references to these information agencies in their own publications were ignored, as were blogs, Internet resources and press monitoring services)
·       Russia’s central and federal printed media (the 250 most authoritative newspapers and magazines)
·       Federal media television and radio broadcasts (Channel One, Rossiya television, NTV, Ren-TV, TVC, Radio Russia, Radio Mayak, Voice of Russia Radio, Ekho Moskvy Radio, RSN Radio, Vesti-FM Radio, City-FM Radio, Radio Kommersant-FM and others)
·       Regional printed media in the most densely populated Russian regions (St. Petersburg, Bashkortostan, Tatarstan, the Chelyabinsk, Irkutsk, Kemerovo, Nizhny Novgorod and Novosibirsk, Rostov, Samara, Saratov, Sverdlovsk, Volgograd, and Voronezh regions, and Khabarovsk, Krasnodar, Krasnoyarsk, Perm and Primorye territories)

INTERNATIONAL MEDIA

Interfax was again named the leader in terms of reference frequency among the three leading Russian information agencies on the basis of a survey of foreign mass media publications from the Factiva and LexisNexis archives.
Interfax was the most frequently cited news agency in this group in all major international information agencies between January 1 and December 31, 2011.
