Interfax remains most-quoted russian news agency in foreign and russian mass media

Interfax remains the most-quoted Russian news agency in the domestic and foreign media, judging by the analysis of publications in the Factiva (containing 31,000 leading news and business sources) and LexisNexis (containing about 35,000 international sources of information) world media databanks and the Interfax SCAN news and analysis databank (contains 3,435 sources) in the first half of 2011.

Interfax remains the most-quoted Russian news agency in the domestic and foreign media, judging by the analysis of publications in the Factiva (containing 31,000 leading news and business sources) and LexisNexis (containing about 35,000 international sources of information) world media databanks and the Interfax SCAN news and analysis databank (contains 3,435 sources) in the first half of 2011.
The three biggest Russian news agencies (Interfax, RIA Novosti and ITAR-TASS) were rated by the number of references in the foreign media in the following categories:
- Major World Publications, Mega News by LexisNexis classification - 817 editions,
- US Newspapers by LexisNexis classification - 861 English-language editions,
- UK Newspapers by LexisNexis classification - 647 English-language editions,
- German Publications by LexisNexis classification - 240 German-language mass media),
- French Publications by LexisNexis classification - 22 French-language editions,
- Biggest international news agencies (Reuters, Dow Jones, AP, AFP, EFE, Xinhua)
The survey of the most often quoted news agencies in the Russian mass media was carried out by SCAN and involved the eight biggest news agencies based in Russia: Interfax, RIA Novosti, ITAR-TASS, Reuters (references in the Russian mass media), Prime-TASS, Rosbusinessconsulting (RBC), Regnum, and Rosbalt.
The rating was in the following categories:
- All Russian mass media (1,910 sources represented in the SCAN system). The research method excluded information products of news agencies from the search in order to increase objectivity and reliability. The search did not include blogs and other Internet resources (which do not belong to the media category) and news digests (which duplicate search results).
- Russia‘s central and federal printed media (the 233 most authoritative newspapers and magazines)
- Federal radio and television (surveyed TV and radio companies included: Channel 1, Rossiya television channel, NTV, Ren-TV, TVTs, Radio of Russia, Mayak radio, Voice of Russia, Ekho Moskvy, City-FM, and others)
- Regional printed editions in Russia‘s most populated regions (Bashkortostan, Volgograd region, Voronezh region, Irkutsk region, Kemerovo region, Krasnodar territory, Krasnoyarsk territory, Nizhny Novgorod region, Novosibirsk region, Perm territory, Primorye territory, Rostov region, Samara region, St. Petersburg, Saratov region, Sverdlovsk region, Tatarstan, Khabarovsk territory, Chelyabinsk region).

INTERNATIONAL PRINTED EDITIONS

Interfax topped the list of the three Russian news agencies cited by world media in the archives of LexisNexis.
In the first half of 2011, the largest English-language printed editions (LexisNexis attributes 817 editions to that category) quoted Interfax 6,040 times, RIA Novosti - 2,610 times, ITAR-TASS - 232 times.
The U.S. leading printed editions (861 by LexisNexis classification) quoted Interfax 107 times, RIA Novosti 79 times, and ITAR-TASS - 57 times during that period.
Interfax had the top ranking, 57 references, in the British printed media (647 by LexisNexis classification), as compared with 52 for RIA Novosti and 27 for Itar-Tass.
It was the same in the German printed editions (240 by LexisNexis classification), which mentioned Interfax 423 times, Itar-Tass 82 times and RIA Novosti 49 times.
French newspapers and magazines (22 by LexisNexis classification) cited Interfax 58 times, RIA Novosti 54 times and Itar-Tass 22 times.

RUSSIAN MASS MEDIA

By total number of references in the Russian media, Interfax ranked first in the first half of 2011 with 42,232 references. The indicators stood at 33,443 for RIA Novosti and 28,967 for Itar-Tass. Next were Reuters with 13,077 references, RBC with 12,490 references, Prime-Tass with 4,686 references, Rosbalt with 2,032 references and Regnum with 1,943 references.
(The research method excluded information products of news agencies, blogs, Internet resources and news digests).
In the category of "Central and Federal Printed Media in Russia" (THE 233 most authoritative newspapers and magazines), Interfax was quoted 4,232 times in January-June 2011. The indicators stood at 2,501 for RIA Novosti, 1,612 for Reuters, 982 for Itar-Tass, 601 for Prime-Tass, 398 for RBC, 106 for Rosbalt and 84 for Regnum.
In the category of "Federal Television and Radio Channels", Interfax was cited 11,123 times in January-June 2011. There were 6,452 references to RIA Novosti, 4,921 for Itar-Tass, 1,729 for Reuters, 359 for RBC, 69 for Rosbalt, 36 for Regnum and 24 for Prime-Tass.
In the "Regional Printed Editions" category in the 19 most densely populated Russian regions, Interfax won 11 first places, including those in Bashkortostan (together with Itar-Tass), Tatarstan, Krasnoyarsk and Perm territories, Voronezh, Kemerovo, Nizhny Novgorod, Samara, Saratov and Sverdlovsk regions and St. Petersburg.
RIA ranked first in five regions: Krasnodar and Khabarovsk territories, Volgograd, Irkutsk and Novosibirsk regions.
Itar-Tass led in the Primorye territory, and RBC in the Chelyabinsk region
