Interfax most frequently cited news agency in Russian and foreign media

Interfax remains the Russian news agency that is most frequently cited by Russian and foreign media, according to a survey for the first half of 2010. The survey is based on two principal global media databases – Factiva (35,000 leading sources of political and business information) and LexisNexis (www.lexisnexis.com), which houses over 37,000 foreign sources of information - and SCAN (System for Comprehensive Analysis of News), which contains texts from 2,076 Russian national and regional media outlets.

Among other things, the survey looks at how frequently the top three Russian news agencies - Interfax, RIA Novosti and ITAR-TASS – were cited by foreign media. There were the following categories:
· Major World Publications in the LexisNexis classification, 801 publications;
· U.S. Newspapers in the LexisNexis classification, 847 publications in the English language;
· UK Newspapers in the LexisNexis classification, 554 English-language publications;
· German Publications in the LexisNexis classification, 216 publications in German;
· French Publications in the LexisNexis classification, 19 publications in French;
· Major international news agencies – Reuters, Dow Jones, The Associated Press, EFE, and Xinhua.
The survey of citing frequency in the Russian media was based on SCAN (2,076 national and regional outlets) and covered eight principal news agencies operative in Russia – Interfax, RIA Novosti, ITAR-TASS, Reuters (as cited in Russian media), PRIME-TASS, RosBusinessConsulting (RBC), Regnum, and Rosbalt.
There were the following ranking categories:
· Russia as an information space (2,076 outlets represented in SCAN). For purposes of objectivity and authenticity, references to these news agencies in their own material are not taken into account in the survey;
· Russian central (Moscow-based) and federal print media (about 650 particularly influential newspapers and magazines);
· Federal television and radio; the companies under survey include television channels First Channel, Rossiya, NTV, REN-TV and TVTs, and radio stations Radio Rossii, Mayak, Golos Rossii (Voice of Russia), Ekho Moskvy and Radio City-FM;
· Regional print media in particularly densely populated regions: the republics of Bashkortostan and Tatarstan, the regions of Volgograd, Voronezh, Irkutsk, Kemerovo, Nizhny Novgorod, Novosibirsk, Rostov, Samara, Saratov, Sverdlovsk and Chelyabinsk, the territories of Perm, Krasnodar, Krasnoyarsk, Primorye, and Khabarovsk, and the city of St. Petersburg.
