Interfax most frequently sourced news provider in Russian and foreign media

Interfax remains the most frequently cited Russian news provider by local and foreign media outlets, according to a survey based on the SCAN database (System for Comprehensive Analysis of News), which contains texts from 1,630 Russian national and regional media outlets) and archives from LexisNexis (www.lexisnexis.com), which houses over 37,000 foreign sources of information.

The survey also looked at how times the top three Russian news agencies - Interfax, RIA Novosti, ITAR-TASS – were quoted by foreign media.

The survey results have been broken up into the following categories for references in the Russian media:

The amount of references by all Russian information providers (1,630 sources in the SCAN database); for purposes of objectivity and authenticity, the survey disregarded references to those agencies in their own publications;

The amount of references by Russian central (Moscow-based) and federal print media (about 400 particularly influential newspapers and magazines);

The amount of references by federal television and radio, which includes TV channels such as First Channel, Rossiya, NTV, TVTs and REN-TV, and radio stations Mayak, Golos Rossii (Voice of Russia) and Ekho Moskvy;

The amount of references by regional print media in 19 densely populated regions: republics of Bashkortostan and the republic of Tatarstan, the regions of Volgograd, Voronezh, Irkutsk, Kemerovo, Nizhny Novgorod, Novosibirsk, Perm, Rostov, Samara, Saratov, Sverdlovsk and Chelyabinsk, the territories of Krasnodar, Krasnoyarsk, Primorye, and Khabarovsk, and the city of St. Petersburg.

The survey results have also been broken up into the following categories for references in the foreign media:

The amount of references by Major World Publications in the LexisNexis archives, 749 publications in the English language;

The amount of references by U.S. print media (U.S. Newspapers in the LexisNexis archives, 831 publications in English language);

The amount of references by British print media (UK Newspapers in the LexisNexis archives, 553 publications in the English language);

The amount of references by German print media (German Newspapers in the LexisNexis archives, 204 publications in the German language);

The amount of references by French print media (French Newspapers in the LexisNexis archives, 19 publications in the French language);

Major international news agencies (Reuters, The Associated Press, Agence France Presse, EFE and Xinhua).
