Armenia wants to use newly built transit power lines to become regional energy hub

YEREVAN. June 9 (Interfax) - Armenia is expecting to become a regional electrical power hub with the development of its infrastructure for energy exchange on the North-South route, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said.

"Currently, Armenia is actively working on the gradual liberalization of the electricity market, which is open for new opportunities and which can create favorable conditions for interstate electricity trade," Pashinyan said, speaking at the Eurasian Congress in Sochi on Friday.

The republic is developing production capacities, and reconstructing substations and power lines, he said. In addition, the construction of Armenia-Iran and Armenia-Georgia high-voltage lines is underway, which will contribute to the "formation of a North-South electricity route" and create new opportunities for increasing exports, imports, transit and the seasonal exchange of electricity.

"With this, Armenia can become a kind of regional electricity hub," Pashinyan said.
