EU to allocate 87 mln euros for reinforcing Moldova's national security - Borrell

BRUSSELS. May 31 (Interfax) - EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell spoke on Wednesday in Chisinau to announce an 87-million-euro non-lethal security assistance package for Moldova.

"The European Peace Facility will be providing 87 million euros of non-lethal support to enhance national security, stability and resilience in the defense sector," Borrell said when speaking at the inauguration ceremony for the EU Partnership Mission in the Republic of Moldova (EUPM Moldova), with the aim "to strengthen Moldova's resilience."

The package in question includes only non-lethal equipment, and the Moldovan army needs assistance in logistics and organization, he said. "It needs a lot of things which are not arms and this will be provided by this 87 million euros of support," Borrell said.

The Council of the European Union announced on April 24 the establishment of the EUPM Moldova, a civilian EU mission, to strengthen resilience of the security sector.
