Tajikistan, China sign 25 cooperation documents

DUSHANBE. May 18 (Interfax) - Twenty-five cooperation agreements have been signed at the end of high-level negotiations in the presence of Tajik President Emomali Rahmon and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, the Tajik presidential administration said in a statement.

The documents include intergovernmental agreements on joint antiterrorism exercises and cooperation in search and rescue operations for civilian planes, and a memorandum between the Tajik Ministry of Economic Development and Trade and the Chinese Ministry of Commerce on deepening trade and economic ties.

Rahmon arrived in China for a state visit and the first Central Asia-China high-level summit.

The sides addressed ways to strengthen cooperation in the green economy, digital technologies, infrastructure, the power industry, the construction and renovation of power plants in Tajikistan, and the construction of power transmission lines.

They underlined the importance of using modern technologies and borrowing Chinese practices to develop domestic industries, agriculture and infrastructure, setting up joint ventures, and involving Chinese enterprises in projects for manufacturing and agricultural parks in Tajikistan.

The sides discussed the resumption of flights between Dushanbe and Beijing, the development of Tajikistan's tourist infrastructure, broader cooperation in humanitarian affairs, including science and education, and a larger quota for Tajik students in China.

It was announced after the Rahmon-Xi negotiations that Dushanbe supports the opening of the China-Tajikistan-North Afghanistan economic corridor. "In this area, Tajikistan affirms the importance of developing and implementing a project to build a road from Varshez in the Shungan district of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region to the Kulma-Karasu junction, and to renovate the Kulma-Karasu checkpoint. The Chinese leader welcomed the initiative," the press service said.

The sides agreed on the joint renovation of the Tajik aluminum company Talco. "Proper measures will be taken to launch production of electric vehicles and their spare parts in Tajikistan. It was underlined that implementing Chinese cutting-edge technologies of planting and processing crops, especially cotton, fruit and vegetables, would be beneficial for both sides," it said.

Regarding cooperation with esteemed international organizations, such as the United Nations, the sides emphasized the need for a more intensive fight against terrorism, extremism, cybercrime, drug trafficking and trans-border organized crime.

In the light of tensions in certain parts of the world and the need for stronger cooperation in ensuring security and stability, the sides noted the importance of broadening close cooperation between respective agencies.
