Georgian president opposed to resumption of flights to, from Russia

TBILISI. May 10 (Interfax) - Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili has said that the cancellation of the visa system for Georgian citizens by the Russian administration and the resumption of flights between the two countries would be unacceptable at this point.

"The resumption of direct flights to and from Georgia and the cancellation of the visa system for Georgian citizens would be unacceptable as long as Russia continues the aggression against Ukraine and occupation of our territories," Zourabichvili said on social media on Wednesday.

Georgian government representatives have yet to comment on Russia's decision to scrap the visa system and to resume flights to and from Georgia.

Earlier on Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed an order to lift the ban on flights between Russia and Georgia.

Russian airlines are planning to perform seven flights between Moscow and Tbilisi per week on the basis of the presidential order, a representative of the Russian Transport Ministry told Interfax.

Air traffic between Russia and Georgia stopped in July 2019 following the Russian president's order.
