EU studying legal aspects of possible use of frozen Russian assets for Ukraine

BRUSSELS. Jan 20 (Interfax) - The idea of confiscating Russian assets frozen in the West and allocating them for the rehabilitation of Ukraine needs a profound legal due diligence, a high-ranking EU official told reporters.

Commenting on the condition of anonymity on the agenda of the upcoming January 23 meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council at the Council of the European Union, the official said that there is legal debate going on about the frozen assets and how they could be put to use. There are many legal problems in this regard, the official said.

EU assistance to Ukraine will be one of the main items on the agenda of the upcoming Foreign Affairs Council meeting. When asked the relevant question, the official noted that it is up to EU foreign ministers to decide whether they will discuss this subject at their meeting next Monday, but said that he does not know this.
