Power supply situation difficult in west of Ukraine, Kiev and Odessa regions - energy minister

MOSCOW. Dec 29 (Interfax) - Ukraine's power grid and generation facilities sustained "certain damage" on Thursday, Ukrainian Energy Ministry German Galushchenko said.

"Generation facilities and the power grid have sustained certain damage. As of 11:00 a.m., the situation is difficult in the west of the country, in the Odessa and Kiev regions," Ukrainian media outlets quoted Galushchenko as saying in a social media post.

Ukraine is facing emergency blackouts, but repair teams are already restoring power supply, he said.

Forty percent of consumers in Kiev are currently without electricity, Ukrainian media said, citing the capital's Mayor Vitaly Klichko.

This situation is due to "necessary safety measures being taken by energy sector specialists, who are working to restore power supply," Klichko said.

Emergency power outages have been applied in the city of Lvov and partially in two adjacent districts, Ukrainian media have reported with reference to the Lvov regional power operator's social media post.

"Emergency power outages have been applied in Lvov and its suburbs, as well as partially in the Yavorov and Lvov districts," it said.

As reported earlier, power supply to over 470,000 customers in the Lvov region was cut after a local infrastructure facility was damaged. The Lvov mayor said 90% of the city dwellers were left without electricity.
