Turkmen and Azerbaijani leaders plan to develop energy and transport partnership

ASHGABAT. Dec 14 (Interfax) - Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, speaking at a meeting with his Turkmen counterpart Serdar Berdimuhamedov, supported an initiative to boost the two countries' partnership in the fuel and energy sector and transport, the Turkmenistan State News Agency said.

Aliyev and Berdimuhamedov discussed the progress made in implementing earlier reached agreements. A separate topic on the meeting's agenda was the prospects of broadening cooperation in ensuring energy security and building modern transit and transport infrastructure given the countries' advantageous geographical positions.

The fuel and energy sector and transport were and remain today among the crucial avenues of mutually beneficial cooperation, the Azerbaijani president said, giving his full support to the Turkmen side's proposals to further enhance their partnership in these key areas, the news agency said.

In this context, the sides emphasized the relevance of the memorandum of understanding signed by the Turkmen and Azerbaijani governments in Ashgabat in January 2021 on the joint exploration and development of the hydrocarbon resources of the Dostluk deposit in the Caspian Sea.

Aliyev and Berdimuhamedov met in the Awaza national tourist area ahead of the start of the first Turkmen-Azerbaijani-Turkish summit.
