Tokayev proposes holding snap presidential elections in Kazakhstan this fall

NUR-SULTAN. Sept 1 (Interfax) - Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has proposed holding snap presidential elections in the country in the fall of 2022.

"As you know, the next presidential elections are due to take place in 2024, and the next parliamentary elections in 2025. [...] But I propose holding snap presidential elections in the fall of this year," Tokayev said in his address to the people of Kazakhstan.

Tokayev proposed limiting the number of terms one person may serve as the country's president to one seven-year term without the right to seek reelection.

"After lengthy deliberation, I came to a conclusion that there is a need to revise the number and duration of presidential terms. I propose limiting the mandate of the president to one seven-year term without the right to run for reelection," Tokayev said.  

"On one hand, seven years are a sufficient period to accomplish any ambitious program. On the other hand, limiting the presidential mandate to one term will ensure the head of state's maximum concentration on tackling the strategic objectives of nationwide development," he said.

Tokayev also proposed that parliamentary elections be held in Kazakhstan in the first half of 2023 instead of 2025.

"I propose that we hold the elections of the Majilis and maslikhats of all levels in the first half of next year," Tokayev said in his address to the nation.

Kazakhstan was due to hold parliamentary elections in 2025.
