Russia asks to hold UNSC meeting on Thursday to address attacks on Zaporizhzhya NPP

NEW YORK, UN. Aug 10 (Interfax) - Russian First Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Dmitry Polyansky has confirmed Russia's request for holding a UN Security Council meeting on August 11 in connection with the Ukrainian attacks on the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant.

"I confirm that. We have asked for a meeting to address the Ukrainian attacks on the Zaporizhzhya NPP. This topic deserves an intense conversation with the colleagues in the Security Council," Polyansky said on Telegram.

"The Ukrainian provocations should not be kept secret from the public," he said.

A source in the Russian mission to the United Nations told Interfax earlier that Russia has asked for holding a UN Security Council meeting on August 11 in connection with the Ukrainian attacks on the Zaporizhzhya NPP.

Another source said that Russia had also asked for the participation of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi in the meeting as a rapporteur.

The Zaporizhzhya NPP came under another attack by the Ukrainian Armed Forces on August 7. Administrative buildings were damaged.

Earlier, Grossi expressed concern about the attacks on the Zaporizhzhya NPP and the readiness to lead a mission of IAEA safety, security and safeguards experts to the site.

The Zaporizhzhya NPP is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe. It operates six VVER-1000 reactor units, the first of which was put in operation in December 1984 and the sixth in October 1995.
