Azerbaijan to sign new energy security agreement with EU - President Aliyev

BAKU. July 15 (Interfax) - Azerbaijan and the European Union will sign an energy security document over the next few days, the country's President Ilham Aliyev said.

"An important document - one on energy security - will be signed between the EU and Azerbaijan in the very near future, which will take our cooperation to a higher level," Aliyev said at a meeting on the results of the first half of the year on Friday.

He recalled his repeated meetings and telephone conversations with European Council President Charles Michel, the central topic of which was the normalization of Azerbaijani-Armenian relations.

"However, parallel broad discussions are being held over the future development of EU-Azerbaijan relations. This year we are actively cooperating with the EU. As you know, we are working on a new agreement [on strategic partnership]. The bulk of the agreement has been agreed. The remaining issues are being discussed. I hope all will be agreed on soon," Aliyev said.

Earlier on Friday, the European Commission (EC) announced on its website that EC President Ursula von der Leyen and EC energy commissioner Kadri Simson will visit Azerbaijan on July 18 to meet with the country's leadership.
