Ukraine, Moldova to reopen Berezine-Basarabeasca rail line

MOSCOW. June 24 (Interfax) - Ukraine and Moldova are planning to resume cargo traffic on the Berezine-Basarabeasca rail line this fall.

The Moldovan Infrastructure and Regional Development Ministry and the Ukrainian Infrastructure Ministry signed a memorandum of mutual understanding in the development of railroad service on June 23, 2022, Ukrainian media outlets said with the reference to the Moldovan ministry website.

The document was signed by Moldovan Deputy Prime Minister Andrei Spinu and Ukrainian Infrastructure Minister Oleksandr Kubrakov.

"Thus, the Republic of Moldova will be able to export and import goods through the Ismail port on the Danube River and reduce the clogging of the Reni port. At the same time, Ukraine will be using the line to export goods to the Republic of Moldova and EU member states," the report said.

The Berezine-Basarabeasca was deconstructed in the Ukrainian territory in 1997, and the line section between Rotove and Raukhivka stations was closed in 1999 to bypass Odesa.

Now the line will be rebuilt on about 23 kilometers, including 1.2 kilometers in the Moldovan territory.
