Five new non-permanent members of UNSC elected

NEW YORK, UN. June 10 (Interfax) - The UN General Assembly elected Ecuador, Japan, Malta, Mozambique and Switzerland on Thursday to serve as non-permanent members of the UN Security Council.

Ecuador was elected by 190, Japan by 184 votes, Malta by 185, Mozambique by 192 and Switzerland by 187.

The new non-permanent members of the UN Security Council will serve in this capacity in 2023-2024, as a replacement for India, Ireland, Kenya, Mexico and Norway.

The UN Security Council has 15 members, including five permanent members with a veto right, namely, China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Ten non-permanent members are elected for a two-year term, and five of them are replaced each year. Last year, Albania, Brazil, Gabon, Ghana and the UAE were elected non-permanent members.
