Belgium starting program for Ukrainian refugees to exchange hryvnia banknotes for euros

MOSCOW. May 30 (Interfax) - The National Bank of Belgium (NBB) and the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) plan to launch a program entitling Ukrainian refugees to exchange hryvnia banknotes for euros starting June 1, the NBB press service said.

Ukrainian media outlets have reported with reference to the NBB that Ukrainian refugees registered in Belgium would be entitled to exchange up to 10,000 hryvni per adult in banknotes for euros at NBB counters and at branches of the participating banks.

Said Belgian banks will accept 100, 200, 500, and 1,000 hryvni notes for exchange.

According to the Belgian Financial Sector Federation (FEBELFIN), Ukrainian refugees have opened nearly 11,300 bank accounts in Belgium since February 24.

As reported earlier, Germany on May 24 started a program of exchanging hryvnia banknotes for euros, with the initial amount of Ukrainian currency intended for exchange set at 1.5 billion hryvni.
