Hungarian embassy indignant at NSDC secretary's remarks, demands explanations from Ukrainian officials

KYIV. May 4 (Interfax-Ukraine) - The Hungarian embassy to Ukraine has expressed indignation at a remark by Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) Secretary Oleksiy Danilov, who alleged that Russia warned Hungary about the beginning of its operation in advance, and demanded explanations from Ukrainian officials.

"The Hungarian embassy to Ukraine is indignant at the remark made by Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) Secretary Oleksiy Danilov during a TV marathon on May 2, 2022. His allegations about Hungary are false and unfounded and incite hatred towards the Hungarian people and Hungary among Ukrainian public," the embassy said on social media on Tuesday.

The embassy urged Danilov to take his words back.

"We strongly reject and condemn the slander against Hungary and the intentions behind it. We urge Mr. Danilov to retract his statement," the embassy said.

The embassy said it was expecting explanations from Ukrainian officials regarding their vision of the future of bilateral neighborly relations in that context.

"This is far from being the first comment on Hungary made by certain members of the Ukrainian leadership in this manner, while Hungary is a member of NATO and the EU that has repeatedly proven its support for and solidarity with Ukraine. Hence, our embassy is expecting explanations from relevant Ukrainian officials regarding their vision of the future of bilateral neighborly relations in the context of such statements," it said.

Danilov claimed that Russia warned Hungary about the beginning of the special operation in Ukraine. "It [Hungary] thought for some reason that it could take part of its territory. The country that behaved in such a manner, let us see what consequences that country would face," he said.
