U.S. diplomats back to Ukraine, so far temporarily - CNN

KYIV. April 27 (Interfax-Ukraine) - U.S. diplomats have returned to Ukraine for the first time since February 24, CNN said on Tuesday.

"U.S. diplomats returned to Ukraine today [...], according to a source familiar with the matter. The diplomats crossed into the country from Poland and traveled to the western city of Lviv for a day trip, according to the source," CNN said.

The Department of State plans to reassess the security situation for the diplomats' day trips into Lviv constantly, the source said.

"As the secretary [of state] said, US diplomats will return to Ukraine this week. We are constantly reassessing and evaluating the security situation with a view toward resuming Embassy Kyiv operations as soon possible to facilitate our support to the government and people of Ukraine," a spokesman for the Department of State said.

Meanwhile, the U.S. embassy to Ukraine said overnight on Twitter that the U.S. diplomats were preparing to resume operations in Kyiv.

"Great to be back! Today, members of the Embassy team traveled to Lviv to meet with key partners, including the MFA Ukraine. The visit was a first step ahead of more regular travel in the immediate future. Preparations are underway to resume Kyiv operations as soon as possible," the embassy said.
