Latvian president to visit Moldova

CHISINAU. April 7 (Interfax) - Latvian President Egils Levits will visit Moldova on Thursday to discuss the current geopolitical situation, regional security, ways of strengthening bilateral relations, progress of Moldova's reforms, and the Moldovan agenda of European integration in the context of its application for admission to the European Union, the Moldovan presidential press service told Interfax.

The Latvian president will be accompanied by Interior Minister Marija Golubeva and State Border Guard Chief Gen. Guntis Pujats, who are to meet with their Moldovan counterparts.

The visit program includes a joint press conference of the two presidents, Levits' meetings with Moldovan Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu, a visit to the Moldovan Constitutional Court, and a meeting with the Latvian community.

According to the Latvian presidential press service, the AirBaltic airline has responded to a call for arranging a flight from Riga to Chisinau to transport humanitarian aid and refugees. The cargo provided by the Latvian government together with non-governmental organizations and enterprises consists of foods and hygiene products for a Ukrainian refugee center.

As many as 363,507 Ukrainian citizens came to Moldova between February 24 and April 6. Out of that number, 268,415 have already left Moldova. In all, 95,092 foreign citizens, including 47,272 minors, are currently present in Moldova. The Moldovan Bureau for Migration and Asylum said it had received 6.111 asylum applications to date.
