IAEA Director General Grossi visiting Ukraine for talks on nuclear site safety - statement

PARIS. March 29 (Interfax) - International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi is currently in Ukraine, where he plans to discuss the IAEA's assistance in guaranteeing the safety of nuclear sites located in the country, the IAEA said in a statement.

"The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Mariano Grossi, is in Ukraine for talks with senior government officials on the IAEA's planned delivery of urgent technical assistance to ensure the safety and security of the country's nuclear facilities," the statement says.

The talks should also address measures to "help avert the risk of an accident that could endanger people and the environment," it said.

The IAEA's technical support would imply posting IAEA experts to prioritized nuclear facilities and providing "vital safety and security supplies including monitoring and emergency equipment."

While in Ukraine, Grossi is expected to visit one of the Ukrainian nuclear power plants, it said.
