Severomorsk destroyer conducts live-fire exercise in Barents Sea

MOSCOW. March 4 (Interfax) - The crew of the Severomorsk large antisubmarine ship conducted a shooting practice with coastal, marine and air targets in the Barents Sea, the Northern Fleet stated on Friday.

"During the air defense exercise, the ship's combat crews engaged mock air targets with a Kinzhal air defense missile system," the statement said.

The training area off the Kola Peninsula was closed to commercial navigation for the duration of the exercise, it said.

Earlier, the Severomorsk practiced several tasks with a mock enemy submarine (simulated by a Northern Fleet nuclear-powered submarine), including search for a submarine, maintaining contact with it, forcing it to surface, and countering a torpedo attack. The sailors also fired underwater bombs.

Once the mission is complete, the destroyer will return to its base in Severomorsk.
