DUSHANBE. March 4 (Interfax) - The United States has launched a $900,000 project to enhance Border Forces' capacity for monitoring the Tajik-Afghan border.

The U.S. embassy in Dushanbe, in cooperation with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), has announced the launch of "a new project to contribute to the protection of the Tajik-Afghan border from the illegal movement of weapons and drugs, irregular migration, and public health risks."

"This project will provide training to Border Forces officers and improve infrastructure on the Tajik-Afghan border over the next 36 months at a cost of $900,000," the embassy said in a press release.

Since 2002, the U.S. government has delivered various projects to strengthen border security through the renovation or rebuilding of border outposts, border crossing facilities, and three training centers, the press release said.

It has also provided other assistance projects, including equipment upgrades and trainings to maintain security and stability in Tajikistan, the embassy said.

According to the embassy, the United States is implementing several projects focusing on advancing border security management through skills development and infrastructure renovation to enhance security and stability in the region.
