More than 2,000 refugees near Polish border - Belarusian border guards

MINSK. Nov 11 (Interfax) - More than 2,000 migrants remain near the Belarusian-Polish border, the Belarusian State Border Committee said on Thursday.

"More than 2,000 refugees, including many women and young children, remained on the border line near the Polish fences as of the morning of November 11. Several small groups, in total some 200 people, arrived at the improvised camp within 24 hours," the Belarusian State Border Committee said.

The situation remains tense, it said.

"The weather conditions, the shortage of food and water threaten the physical condition of the people who are seeking protection in the countries of the European Union. In the past 24 hours, medical assistance was provided in the refugee camp to two women who had hypothermia and a head injury. Healthcare workers also helped a child who had signs of hypothermia last night. The reports on a death of a refugee are not true," the Belarusian State Border Committee said.

Medical brigades are constantly present near the migrant camp to provide emergency assistance, the Belarusian State Border Committee said.

"Delegations of the Representation of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Belarus, the International Organization for Migration and the Belarusian Red Cross Society will come to the improvised refugee camp today," the report said.

During August-October, Poland recorded over 28,500 attempts by migrants to illegally cross the border. The most attempts, some 17,300, were made in October, against more than 3,500 in August and almost 7,700 in September.
